It's Been A Bad Month For Kate Middleton

Get updates from Ellen Stewart:

2013 hasn't been the best year for Kate Middleton so far. First, she missed out on the Radio 4 power list, now award-winning author Hilary Mantel's called her a dead eyed mannequin. Ouch.

In a recent lecture the Wolf Hall writer claimed that the Duchess had "no personality of her own" and was "entirely defined by what she wore".

Continuing with her rather scathing, analysis Hilary deemed to Kate's smile to be "plastic" and argued she'd been "selected for her role of princess" because she was "irreproachable: as painfully thin as anyone could wish, without quirks, without oddities, without the risk of the emergence of character”. Eeek!

The author's hour-long 'Royal Bodies' speech for the London Review of Books also touched upon K-Middy's seamless transition from "perfect bride to perfect mother, with no messy deviation”.

Hilary also called the pregnant Duchess “a jointed doll on which certain rags are hung” and remarked that these days, she was seen as “a mother-to-be, and draped in another set of threadbare attributions”.

And if that wasn't enough the Man Booker Prize winner said Kate's official portrait, which was unveiled in January, gave her “dead eyes” and a “strained smile”. The author argued the Duchess’s pre-Royal life meant nothing and “her only point and purpose being to give birth”. Yeeesh!

What's your verdict? Is Hilary justified in her remarks? Or do you reckon she came down too hard on the Duchess?

What utter rot, HuffPost.
It hasn't been a bad month for the Duchess at all.
She's young, healthy and in love. What's more, she is expecting her first child.
This is the happiest time of her life.
Any fat, ugly and spiteful old woman who finds fault with her is to be pitied.

Er! Ms Mantel is jealous of Kate and probably doesn't have a good word to say about anyone! Kate is a natural beauty unlike Ms Mantel......

What a heartless women Hilary is. Maybe behind all this is a frustrated and jealous women. Princes Catherine is a lovely girl an one can see that the royal couple love each other. I would not like to be in her place. May God bless princes Catherine and have pity on Hilary. Does Hilary know what real charity is?

Maybe not a good month for her, but she's had a dam good year or two ... first landing a big fish for a husband and then getting preggers with the prospective future monarch. AND, she'll never have really to WORK for the rest of her life {Don't tell me that smiling and preening at functions amounts to work!].
So let's have no more "poor Kate" stories ... if she doesn't like it there are a few million women who would gladly exchange places with her.

You don't have any real understanding as to what the role entails, its not just about collecting posies. The DoC doesn't write the "poor Duchess " stories, it's alleged journalists at sites and papers of this quality.
09:32 PM on 03/09/2013
Well, I certainly don't have any real understanding - nay, any understanding at all - of your second sentence!
12:12 PM on 02/19/2013
Of course Ms Mantel is entitled to her say. But I hardly think she in a position to comment on anyone's looks.
Ignore her Kate.. she certainly does not speak for all of us. I would have thought that she should have at least met you and spoken to you before she passed those sort of judgement.
Shame on you Ms Mantel. What a nice person you are.... NOT

Kate has had a hard time.....................boo hoo. Try living in the real world love where you actually got to do stuff instead of having lackeys and servants courtesy of the taxpayer.
10:37 AM on 02/19/2013
I'd never switch places with her, that's for sure. I like my freedom and privacy and don't give a damn about paying taxes to have it.
12:20 PM on 02/19/2013
ooooo who's got a touch of the green envy
07:21 AM on 02/19/2013
Er, I presume Ms Mantel has spent a great deal of time with The Duchess to be able to comment on her personality ?? and if we are to form an opinion on how a person dresses, then I suggest comparing the Duchess's impeccable style with that of Ms Mantel's total lack of it !! We weren't all born with Kate's natural beauty, elegance, style and grace, (as can be seen in the above photos), how sad some women just can't accept that and feel the need to advertise their envy and very unattractive 'opinions'. I imagine Kate's stylist would recommend the shade of puce green to be suited to Ms Mantel. KDS, UK
