During January's Spring/Summer couture week, Jean Paul Gaultier paid homage to the late Amy Winehouse with a catwalk full of beehives, heavily-coated eyeliner, corsets and sports jackets. Some said the errie collection was too soon but one thing's for sure; this will go down in fashion history.
Angelina's Oscars outfit left us in shock for weeks after the big event. The actress sent the fashion world into a frenzy with this strapless Versace dress, with that split and that leg-pose. Nice work, Ange.
Stella McCartney presented the Team GB kit back in March, with Phillips Idowu and Jessica Ennis on hand to model the designs. Coincidently, McCartney was also the most searched-for fashion designer of 2012, plus she picked up Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards. Well done, Stella!
In May, Hedi Slimane made his mark as the newly appointed creative director at Yves Saint Laurent by changing the name of the French fashion house. Dropping the 'Yves' was a bold move, but the simple Saint Laurent is already beginning to stick.
We can't reflect on 2012 without giving the Queen a special mention. Her Majesty celebrated 60 years on the throne in June and subsequently, her schedule was jam-packed with royal visits all over the UK. As expected, her well thought-out Diamond Jubilee wardrobe left her looking flawless on every occasion. Nicely done, ma'am.
Amongst the movers and shakers of the style world was Raf Simons, who left his role at Jil Sander to take over the helm at Dior. The pressure mounted when he showed his first collection for the brand at Paris couture week in July. His simply stunning creations left the fashion world watching and waiting in awe.
Prada's platforms weren't the only weird and wonderful shoes at the Spring/Summer 2013 shows. Celine followed suit with a collection of fluffy footwear in Paris. Style statements they are, but we're still asking the question: would you wear them?
Jil Sander showed her first Spring/Summer collection for her own label in September, after eight years away from the brand. The hotly anticipated collection was well received by critics as the fashion world got the master of minimalism back.
Despite the scandal that preceded the Twilight promo tour, K-Stew didn't exactly shy away from the statement red carpet style in November. At the LA premiere, she chose this sheer lace gown from Zuhair Murad. Her raciest look yet? We're sure there'll be plenty more of this to come in 2013.
Hailed as "sublime", Slimane's debut collection for his newly named Saint Laurent was watched by the fashion greats in October. Lanvin's Alber Elbaz summed the 70s-inspired styles up nicely when he told Vogue, "It was very Hedi and it was very Saint Laurent". Fashion friends, Le Smoking look is here to stay.
When H&M announced the collaboration of the year back in June, the fashion world got very, very excited. Maison Martin Margiela For H&M launched in November and eager shoppers queued through the night outside the Regent Street store. Later reports claimed that the collection didn't sell as well as hoped, but we still love this bra-print body top.
We couldn't end the year without one more big fashion move. In November, Nicolas Ghesquiere announced that he was stepping down as creative director of Balenciaga - a position he had held since 1997. The news shocked many, but perhaps more surprising was the next news: Alexander Wang will be Ghesquiere's replacement.
