The frocks these ladies are offered, or, for the Z-listers, loaned, for one night give no indications as to the best dressed woman of the year.

On your list there is one woman who makes a point of selecting her own clothes and actually paying for them, and has chosen wisely and worn well throughout the year: Kate Middleton, our next Queen, or Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge for those who respect her for more than her appearance.
