Sienna Miller Does A Demi In The Name Of Art
Filed under: Have you seen?
According to exhibition sell-speak, Yeo "invites spectators to re-imagine the traditional nude while exploring the stark realities of our contemporary obsession with cosmetic surgery".
In a catalogue for the exhibition, which runs from Friday 9 November to Saturday 12 January, Yeo says of the Sienna pic: "I wanted an image that epitomised the human body in its most naturally beautiful state to make the sharpest possible contrast with my other paintings in this exhibition, which document patients undergoing cosmetic surgery in a bid to help them conform to societal notions of beauty.
"It has been 22 years since a pregnant Demi Moore caused uproar by posing for Annie Leibovitz on the cover of Vanity Fair. In that time society has become almost completely desensitised to the daily exposure to people who have surgically distorted their appearance artificial reasons.
"Yet certain sections of society are still uncomfortable with the appearance of pregnancy and images of naked expectant mothers are rarely seen."
Sienna sat for the painting just weeks before she gave birth to daughter Marlowe on 12 July 2012.
Yeo described the actress as being very "courageous" in agreeing to be his subject, adding: "For me it seemed both appropriate and necessary to exhibit these images of the flesh in Germany: a country with a more relaxed attitude to the corporeal, where the exposed body is not automatically sexualised or considered taboo. In Britain by contrast, the media and public tend to sensationalise the body, and are often unable to view it without scandal."
What do you think of it? Does it break down inhibitions about the pregnant form? Are we too embarrassed about it in the UK? Let us know below...
