Who? The Saturdays

What? The Sats were surfin' USA yesterday, as Vanessa, Mollie and Frankie hit Venice Beach with surfboards and wet suits in tow. As well as showing off their latest bikini style, this was also an opportunity to practise their best surfing-on-dry-land poses, as seen in the picture below:

Where? Venice Beach, California, 10 October

Oh what a show, nothing of interest here unless you just like them because they are female, because they have no talent otherwise and as one guy said (almost) Roll on Monday when Saturday is over.

Never liked Venice Beach that much. I went some years ago, around September. California is a beautiful state but like England the growth of urban sprawl has had a significant effect especially on certain areas. Venice seemed like Blackpool in the sun: dirty, and quite unwelcoming.. far from the 'California Dreaming' image you'd associate with places like this. There were countless shady people walking about the place and the moment you got within yards from the beach area.. it was like being in a Mexican slum to an extent. I understand the Latino population doubled in just a few years, in this state, and that many North American people cannot get away from the Los Angeles area quickly enough.

Maybe it was just a bad time to be there, but I felt glad to be somewhere else. The American dream is killing California, not just by American culture either; immigration and resource exploitation together with the growth of urban sprawl is really taking its toll. It's not sustainable at these rates. There are some fantastic places the further inland you go especially to the North and within the Sierra Nevada mountains, but it does make you wonder how long these places will remain this way. It's quite shocking to see the impact man's footprint has had on this state, in such a small space of time.
