The first rule of applying bright red lippie? Make sure it stays on your lips and doesn't smudge all over your teeth. Never a good look.

Cat Deeley learned that lesson the hard way when she posed for pics at the Derek Lam party celebrating the 2012 Emmy Awards at Cecconi's restaurant in LA.

Apart from the lippie fail, however, everything else was picture-perfect, from the pretty, scarlet lace tiered dress, to the perfectly-polished two-tone waves.

Maybe her makeup artist should pay her some lip service next time...
