The Queen And Duchess Kate Pose In Pastels At Olympic Opening Ceremony

Get updates from Kate McAuley:

The world stood still for the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony last night, with The Queen taking centre stage and a demure Duchess of Cambridge in the wings.

Duchess Kate chose a tailored Christopher Kane number in ice blue with a cinched waist and respectable hemline.

And, yes, Kate looked her normal pretty self too.

The Queen, meanwhile, went for a sparkly and feathery formal frock. And look, not a hair out of place following that impressive sky dive. Very nice work, ma'am.

And, for more Royal style, here's a gallery of some of Kate's finest sartorial moments.

About the only things we have to be proud of with respect to these washout games, badly organised, badly run and planned by idiots.

I love the Royal Family, except for Prince Charles and his wife.! Nuff said on that score!

Had we been at the ceremony, we wouldn't have understood anything that was being badly potrayed!
Good thing? TV commentators telling the story (what story?) of the Industrial Revolution. Underwhelmed doesn't begin to describe how we felt.

I'lL bet the millions of worldwide viewers, watching it on TV, didn't understand it either.
It was embarassing and not a good piece of work by Danny Boyle. Knighthood? Hope not.
We felt sorry for the athletes, as it was 01:00 when it ended.. Danny Boyle insisted on darkness for the whole thing! Be very afraid, Birmingham! He has a 'romantic vision' for you people!

Then, on Friday, we read there were about 500,000 unsold tickets! Down from over 700,000 two days before. A lot of the tickets were for the opening ceremony.
Today, we heard Lord Coe is saying the empty seats were 'corporate' ones???
What, half a million of the £1500 to £200 expensive tickets? We aren't stupid! Overpriced more like.
The only thing worth watching, was lighting the amazing 'cauldron.'
How much did that cost? Finally, Team GB doing well? NOPE. Just the usual

FGS have we nothing more to focus on than what she is wearing everytime she leaves the 'house'. She is no better dressed than the average woman you see on the high street, just that the old fashion style clothes she wears are a hundred times more expensive. Must say I am sick of hearing about Kate's clothes, she has stylists, makeup artists, hairdressers, if she didn't go out 'perfect' then there would be something wrong.

Most of these comments make me positively ashamed to be English! After such a night - a glorious celebration of Britishness - you come up with all these petty, hackneyed complaints about the royals. Get a grip, for pity's sake. The past is the past, if you want to drag up Burmese rubber et al, and our Royal Family - which, unlike many nations, we have managed to keep - is admired by a large proportion of the world. AND they earn their keep - particularly the Queen! Bless her heart, though, she clearly didn't enjoy her evening and I'm not surprised! She's an old lady who's just finished a gruelling Jubilee Tour and she should have been in her bed. She turned up because it was her duty to do so but - for the very first time - I found myself thinking, she's had enough! Time to retire gracefully and hand over to the next generation who still have the stamina. I'm a granny and I'm already enjoying a relaxed old age devoted to doing exactly what I want to do. Shouldn't the Queen be able to do the same?

i think it was both tiredness & the fact that in main . the ceremony was DIRE ! :o/ i do admire her for sticking it out . even though she was seated . not many 86 year old.s would/could handle it !
10:20 AM on 07/29/2012
Certainly, by the time she'd turned up it was growing a little lengthy - all those athletes which, to be fair, couldn't be helped. But I can't go along with dire. I popped on my 'go with it' head and didn't have a bad evening at all. I even enjoyed Mr Bean ... and that's saying something. As a rule he is so exactly NOT my sense of humour I avoid him at all costs! It was a one off - I decided to indulge it. Certainly different from my last Olympics when I recall standing on a grass verge watching a man run past with lighted tin can on the end of a stick!

the queen looked as interested as if someone had broke wind a the side of her, she looked bored throughout the proceedings every time the camera was on her. in my book she is about as patriotic as an immigrant. no offense to the immigrant intended. she was an embarrassment to the British people who had spent there time and trained hard for this event, to walk out in front of a what seemed to be a moody old biddy who was missing her bingo!

so what. who's interested. The more they keep focusing on what she wears is going to get dangerous. They are driving her into the same spotlight as Di. She is not that interesting. It's propaganda to keep the people interested.

she's useless.

No matter what she wears both brothers always look
as if they approve! all that matters I suppose.

This is just free publicity for the dress sellers. I'm sure there were thousands of other women wearing better and more attractive clothes than Kate during the ceremony. huffington just keeps on about this woman for nothing.

We should also provide for those of our national GREAT BRITISH family who are unable through ill health or incapacity to provide for themselves, it is our duty !!

What awful reflections of England from the comments here, The Queen looked wonderful as did the Duchess of Cambridge, and all the other Royals, all these comments decrying the Royal Family reflects a terrible jeallous society infiltrated with hatred of all we as a nation stand for...WE ARE GREAT BRITAIN, WE ARE CHRISTIAN, WE ARE DEMOCRATIC, we should all work for our living and sustainence, we should all respect eachother and other nations, we should be fair and sporting, and encompass all that is good about competitiveness without greed or rancour, and we should teach our children these ideals to make a great tomorrow for us , them and their children.
05:02 AM on 07/29/2012
Not a Royalist, by any chance, are you? And, I should forget the "Great". If you go back into history, there is hardly anywhere we have been involved where we have not left them with troubles .... Burma (took the rubber, etc), Pakistan (split East and West), Palestine (Balfour), Ireland (imported Protestants from Scotland), South Africa (we invented concentration camps), Sri Lanka (imported Tamils from Southern India to work as cheap labour on tea plantations), etc. etc. As for Christian ..... how dare you presume us to be Christian. "respect each other and other nations" ... we have certainly shown a great deal of respect for the Iraqis, Afghans, Libyans, Palestinians, etc. etc. I rest my case.
10:49 AM on 07/29/2012
Not a very good case though, is it, gormar? There are very few countries with an entirely blameless past ... and how far back into history do you want to go? No ... don't tell me. No doubt in your book we should have let the French have their way with Britain during their revolution. Lots of aristocratic heads in baskets - you'd have approved of that!
Also, like it or not, ours is a Christian country. That's a fact! And we would do a great deal better if we all [and that includes you] tried to live our lives with christian principles. [Please note the small c!]
