1970s Fashion: Platform Shoes, Bianca Jagger And Vivienne Westwood

Get updates from MyDaily Staff:

Seventies style continued on from the hippie-influenced 60s. With bell-bottoms and miniskirts from the last decade continuing to dominate, fashions were gripped by "disco fever" . Flared jeans and platform shoes also became popular, as did three-piece Saturday Night Fever-inspired suits for men and wrap dresses for women.

Glam rockers like David Bowie and Roxy Music helped influence 1970s style, with plenty of metallic, glitter, and sequins, with hot pants, boas and sheer blouses. Shops such Biba and Granny Takes a Trip were the key purveyors of glam rock 1970s style.

Key designers who shaped the feel of the decade include Diane von Furstenberg, who created the jersey wrap dress in 1972 and Halston, whose draped creations adorned Studio 54 regulars like Liza Minnelli and Elizabeth Taylor. Yves Saint Laurent's designs were championed by the likes of Bianca Jagger, who wore his Le Smoking blazer when she wed Mick Jagger in 1971.

In addition to the dance-fuelled style of the 1970s (leotards, spandex etc), the punk movement was also key. Started by Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren, it was a reaction to the poor state of the economy. The punk's subversive wardrobe included worn leather jackets, ripped jeans, torn T-shirts, PVC and safety pins, with bold hair styles like Mohicans and crazy dyed colours.
