The pictures of Kelly Brook sitting front row at the Giles show
on Monday and the ones of Viola Davis attending the 43rd NAACP Image Awards on 17 Feb have caused us to clutch our hands to our chests and wince in sympathy with their tightly-bound bosoms.
And so we feel we must speak out in defence of oppressed breasts everywhere.
Ladies, the wise words of Wonderbra should be ringing in your ears right about now - LIFT AND SEPARATE. Instead this wisdom is being ignored in favour of squishing and smooshing. The result is not too dissimilar from a couple of bald men having a forehead wrestling contest within the top half of your dress and, from our own youthful experimentation with cleavage boosting techniques on nights out, it's more than a little painful (although kind of useful if you need an impromptu storage space for your debit card).
More importantly, such chest transgressions mean no-one learned ANYTHING from the Great Boob Squashing Of 2011, as perpetrated by Jennifer Hudson's orange Oscars gown.
Or Christina Hendricks' I Don't Know How She Does It
Or Miranda Kerr's crushed cleavage at the Warner Bros and InStyle Golden Globes party
In short, breasts are for life, not just for glitzy events so stop bullying them into too-tight tops.
For balance here's a selection of Viola Davis' better fashion moments:
- February 2009
Giving the gold men a run for their money at the 2009 Oscars in Reem Acra Pre-Fall

- May 2010
Viola proves that purple is definitely one of her colours (we say 'one of' because her red carpet style is definitely bright, bright bright!) at the Met Gala.

- November 2010
This draped dress reminds us of Jennifer Lopez' mint green Valentino at the 2003 Oscars - and that's no bad thing! Viola wore hers to the 2012 Princess Grace Awards

- February 2011
We love this unusually textured black David Meister dress at the 4th annual Essence luncheon.

- March 2011
Viola and husband Julius Tennon take to the 42nd NAACP Image Awards red carpet - him in tip-to-toe black and her in beautiful burgundy.

- October 2011
Looking rather lovely in purple (and with magnificent cleavage) at the UK premiere for The Help (2011).

- November 2011
For red carpet wear, Viola is a big fan of Raoul - this was the brand's 'Penelope' gown which she wore to The Academy's 3rd Annual Governors Award Dinner in 2011.

- January 2012
Raoul again for the Critics' Choice Movie Awards 2012 but this time the Wallis gown from the Pre-Fall 2012 collection.

- January 2012
Viola looked flawless at the 2012 Golden Globes in a custom-made, asymmetric Emilio Pucci gown with Jimmy Choo shoes.

- January 2012
We meant what we said about Viola loving her brights - the hot pink Michael Kors Resort 2012 dress looked simply stunning at a Golden Globes nomination event. She must have loved the look as much as we did because she showed up in a similar electric blue dress for the Bafta tea party!
