Take a look below for five beauty facts you need to know to stay up-to-date with the biggest beauty trends for Autumn/Winter 2012.
- Line me up
The ever versatile black eyeliner got its fair share of love on the catwalks in New York. It added definition to a barely-there look at Altuzarra, while black was blended with a cerise shade over at Alexander Wang. However, for a lesson in seriously smoky cat eyes, look no further than Jason Wu's Spanish inspired models and whatever you do, don't forget about your eyeliner next season.

- Paint the town red
The classic red lip has been a favourite on the catwalks and with the A-list alike, but we're not exaggerating when we say that the seductive shade was everywhere in New York this season. The most striking looks were seen at Marc by Marc Jacobs, Thakoon and Monique Lhuillier, where the cherry red lip colour added a touch of glamour to the red carpet-worthy gowns. If you haven't already embraced the red lip trend, it's definitely time to pucker up.

- Let's go retro
From 1920s inspired updos at Erickson Beamon to 60s style beehives at L.A.M.B, hair took a step back in time at many of this season's shows. However, it was the 1940s glam updos at the Jenny Packham show that really got us reaching for the rollers.

- Our favourite looks
Both the hair and makeup was off-the-chart incredible this season, and there were two shows in particular that stood out for exactly that reason. John Frieda was behind the amazing hair at Zac Posen, where the "glamour of the 1950’s and the allure of Japanese sophistication" was depicted through architectural hair. No one worked the look better than Coco Rocha. Geisha girl? You bet.

Over at Prabal Gurung, Charlotte Tilbury worked her magic on the models backstage. She made us fall in love with blue eyeshadow (a shade many of us are afraid to go near), by creating "birds of paradise" inspired eyes with a striking, metallic peacock colour. The end result was seriously stunning and it complemented Gurung's swirling prints perfectly.

- Barely there
Minimal makeup has been tried and tested by the makeup artists for a few seasons now, and the barely there look reemerged at a handful of key shows in New York. Gisele flaunted the fresh-faced look at Alexander Wang while the models at Tommy Hilfiger wore nothing but rosy cheeks and a clear lip gloss. If the thought of no makeup is just too hard to handle, look to the icy Autumn/Winter style seen at Edun. A touch of metallic eyeshadow on the inner corner of the eyes brought clean complexions alive.
