Jean Paul Gaultier Pays Tribute To Amy Winehouse With Couture Collection

  • Sarah Karmali
Amy Winehouse was reincarnated in fashion form during couture week on Wednesday - thanks to a couture collection from Jean Paul Gaultier, in tribute to the late, great singer.

Eerily-accurate Amy lookalikes took to the runway in Paris, complete with towering beehives, thick winged eyeliner, lip studs (we presume faux) and even the odd cigarette.

And the homage didn't stop there. Amy-inspired fashions ruled, with her unique style sense recreated through use of corsets, waist-cinching belts, sports jackets and pencil skirts - including a distinctly Fred Perry-esque dress as a nod to her collaboration with the brand. JPG even imagined Amy as a tragic bride for his finale.

The beautifully sad collection was applauded by the likes of Beth Ditto and Dita Von Teese in the audience, and, of course, accompanied by a Winehouse soundtrack - performed by an a cappella quartet reminiscent of the singer's former backing vocalists.

A touching tribute? Amy's father Mitch was less impressed, telling The Sun: "Those pictures were a total shock.

"We're still grieving for her loss, and we've had a difficult week with the six-month anniversary of Amy's death. To see her image lifted wholesale to sell clothes was a wrench we were not expecting or consulted on."

The late singer's father went on to describe the show as being in "bad taste" and accused the designer of glamourising "some of the more upsetting times in her life".

Gaultier himself commented on the show, saying that: "She was an icon of fashion and the sense of how she mixed clothes was great."
