Martin Boyce Wins 2011 Turner Prize

Martin Boyce was named winner of the 2011 Turner Prize at a ceremony in Gateshead's Baltic art gallery on Monday night.

The Glasgow-based artist was presented with the award by fashion photographer Mario Testino for his installations which often draw on elements from public spaces - benches, littler bins, trees and so on - to create an experience, almost a memory.

Speaking at a press conference after the announcement Boyce admitted: "The impact of this hasn't even hit yet and I don't know when or if it's going to hit."

The ceremony itself was not without incident, however as a gentleman wearing a pink tutu and sporting the legend 'STUDY THIS' attempted to storm the stage but was escorted away by security.

The gentleman was presumably addressing the matter of arts education funding which Boyce himself referenced in his acceptance speech saying: "At a time when education has been put through the wringer, I'd like to acknowledge the value of accessible education and the importance of teachers."

Boyce saw off competition from fellow shortlisted artists Karla Black, George Shaw and Hilary Lloyd to scoop the £25,000 prize.

Previous Turner Prize winners have included 2010 choice Susan Philipsz, Mark Wallinger, Grayson Perry, Rachel Whiteread and Anish Kapoor.
