The museum will welcome a collection of over 60 dresses created by some of the biggest names in the industry, designed from as early as 1950 and spanning right through to today.

Designs by John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood are already confirmed to appear, but we're sure that by the time the exhibition opens next summer, it will have attracted a whole host more.
Ballgowns: British Glamour since 1950 will run from 19 May 2012, right the way through until 6 January 2013 - so you'll have plenty of time to get your historical fashion fix.
Remind yourselves of all the glittering gown's from this year's Alexander McQueen-themed Met Ball below. We're pretty sure we'll be seeing a fair few of these featuring in the exhibition:
- Alexa Chung
Flying the flag for the Brits, Ms Chung wore SodaStream inspired Christopher Kane on the red carpet.

- Anna Wintour
The biggest surprise of the evening? US Vogue editor Anna chose not to wear Alexander McQueen to the event, despite sitting on the Costume Institute committee. Instead, Ms Wintour sported Chanel couture from the spring/summer 2011 collection.

- Ashley Greene
The actress gave a nod to the nude trend that dominated the Met Ball red carpet in this sparkling strapless Donna Karan.

- Bar Refaeli
The Israeli model shimmered in this metallic sequin column gown - and we just love the turquoise accessories.

- Beyonce
Beyonce looked diva-tastic in this figure-flaunting black and gold Pucci gown.

- Christina Ricci
The actress appeared to pay homage to McQueen muse Daphne Guinness in this dramatic fish-tail gown.

- Claire Danes
Danes pared things right down with this Calvin Klein Collection gown - although we do think a statement necklace wouldn't have gone amiss...

- Colin Firth and Livia Firth
Colin looked positively regal in his Tom Ford tuxe, while wife Livia opted for a sophisticated steely grey gown.

- Dakota Fanning
One of our favourite looks from the evening, we loved Ms Fanning's spring-like Valentino couture ball gown.

- Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson
The actress sexed things up in this thigh-slashed Jason Wu gown - while beau Joshua looked suave in his slim-cut suit.

- Elizabeth Banks
Golden girl Banks nodded to old school Hollywood glamour in figure-hugging gold.

- Elle Fanning
While Dakota got full marks for her Valentino ball gown, little sis Elle clearly still has a lot to learn about dressing for the red carpet...

- Fergie
This ivory Marchesa dress would have been perfect - if Fergie was walking up the aisle. We think the Black Eyed Peas singer let royal wedding excitement get the better of her in this bridal ensemble...

- Ginnifer Goodwin
We adore this emerald green twisted gown. The best bit? It's from Topshop!

- Gisele Bündchen
The super stunned in this red hot Alexander McQueen strapless gown.

- Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwynnie looked utterly chic in this floor-length Stella McCartney gown.

- Iman
This metallic Stella McCartney jumpsuit shouldn't work - but the veteran supe pulled it off with style.

- Jennifer Hudson
The actress flaunted her new figure in this tulle Vera Wang concoction.

- Jessica Alba
The actress proved that maternity wear can be chic - especially if you have a custom-made Ralph Lauren Collection frock lying around...

- Jennifer Lopez
Yes she looks a little like an eccentric granny but we love J Lo's eye-dazzling Gucci frock - and the hot pink lips to match.

- Kate Hudson
Another A-lister proving that baby bumps can look chic, we just loved Kate's luxe oyster draped Stella McCartney gown.

- Kristen Stewart
We love fashion darlings Proenza Schouler - but this red and black frock worn by Twilight's Kristen Stewart somehow misses the mark.

- Ashley Olsen
It might be vintage Dior, but this dress looks like the bizarre lovechild of a milkmaid and Audrey Hepburn circa Breakfast at Tiffany's. And not in a good way.

- Liv Tyler
Tyler goes straight to the top of the fashion class in this feathered Givenchy couture gown. Clearly the actress has been taking lessons from Cate Blanchett's Givenchy red carpet triumph at the Oscars...

- Madonna
We love Madge, but she is prone to the odd style disaster. Thankfully last night she was on fashion form, and we were thrilled to see her rock this star embellished pale blue Stella McCartney bias-cut.

- Maggie Gyllenhaal
The actress dazzled in a blue sequinned Stella McCartney gown.

- Mary-Kate Olsen
MK appeared to be drowning in this vintage Givenchy couture gown. Shame because we love the dress!

- Mia Wasikowska
A daring plunging neckline was order of the day for Ms Wasikowska, who wore Thakoon on the red carpet.

- Michelle Williams
Custom-made Miu Miu and a pixie crop - what's not to like?

- Miranda Kerr
The supermodel channels prima ballerina style in this Marchesa concoction featuring a tutu-like skirt and Nicholas Kirkwood platform laced sandals.

- Christina Hendricks
The Mad Men starlet matched her 'do with her dress with this autumnal Carolina Herrera organza gown.

- Nicole Richie
Nicole was one of a clutch of stars to wear vintage at the ball. The House of Harlow designer rocked a white bias-cut gown and a 1930s beauty look to match.

- Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell
Macca nodded to Alexander McQueen's Scottish heritage in a tartan suit, while girlfriend Nancy looked stunning in a royal blue asymmetric column gown.

- Renee Zellweger
Renee aced the red carpet in this embellished Carolina Herrera nude gown, featuring a sweeping train.

- Rihanna
You could rely on the Barbadian singer to inject a little bit of risqué style to the red carpet - and she did it in spades with this black lace Stella McCartney dress, which featured a nude-look back.

- Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
Colour me beautiful: The Brit model strikes a pose in a revealing Burberry pink satin gown.

- Salma Hayek
The actress and her husband Francois-Henri Pinault are honorary chairs for the Costume Institute Gala Benefit - and she represented in style with this nude cinching Alexander McQueen gown.

- Sarah Burton
Fresh from creating that royal wedding dress, Burton arrived at the Benefit Gala wearing McQueen, natch.

- Sarah Jessica Parker
A long-time patron of McQueen, SJP chose to wear an archive piece by the designer from the autumn/winter 2005 runway collection.

- Stella McCartney
The designer looked understated and chic in her own design - she also dressed numerous others A-listers on the red carpet, including Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow.

- Taylor Swift
The 21-year-old worked some grown-up glamour with this J. Mendel couture asymmetric petal grown.

- Zoe Saldana
Taking her colour inspiration from the Queen's royal wedding outfit (at least that's what we like think), Saldana sported a primrose yellow strapless Calvin Klein Collection floor-length dress.

- Blake Lively and Karl Lagerfeld
How does she do it? While we try to have an open-minded attitude to fashion choices at MyDaily, Blake does challenge our best efforts. How does she manage to make Chanel couture look so cheap? And Karl, what the hell's going on with that jacket? Madame Chanel would not be amused.

- Penelope Cruz
The actress arrived on the arm of Oscar de la Renta wearing - you guessed it - Oscar de la Renta.

- Daphne Guinness
Alexander McQueen's muse dressed in characteristically dramatic style with this jaw-dropping feathered creation.

- Florence Welch
The singer arrived on the arm of Yves Saint Laurent's Stefano Pilati wearing a dramatic white dress by the designer.

- Freida Pinto
Hmmm... We can't make our minds up about this look. The actress opted for a 'brave' Chanel couture gown on the red carpet.

- Kirsten Dunst
This embellished Chanel couture dress is beautiful - but we can't help but think the ankle-skimming length makes the actress look at tad mumsy...

- Leighton Meester
S&M ahoy! Meester edged things up with her black corseted Louis Vuitton gown.
