I talk about hair quite a lot in my new book My Style which has loads of photos of my different styles and colours through the years in it. I've always been adventurous with my hair and been happy to try new things – I even went through a phase of wearing wigs – but I've never tried a really feminine short cut before.
I think changing your hair makes you change things in your wardrobe because pieces that used to suit you suddenly don't go with your haircut so you get to experiment with new styles and looks to find things that work.
I'd been talking about getting a hair chop for a few weeks and looking at pictures of 1960s style icons like Twiggy, Joanna Lumley as Purdy in the Avengers and 1920s singer and actress Josephine Baker for inspiration.
I was finding my old haircut pretty challenging to style and it was getting very long– the fringe was almost down to my chin. I loved it when I was working and someone else was styling it for me, but for day-to-day wear I needed to find something easier. With Ethan and my work commitments I don't have time to spend hours on my hair every morning, but I still wanted a style I can glam up when I have to dress up for events.
I was feeling daring, so asked Melbourne-based hair stylist Kevin Murphy to give me the chop. He's been working with me during Melbourne Spring Fashion Week (MSFW), and says short hair is back in. If you look at online pictures from the runway shows during MSFW, hair is short or styled with up-dos so that the models look like they have short hair, emphasizing their face shapes.
The result is probably 1/3 waif, 1/3 Beatle and 1/3 bowl cut.
I can't wait to start accessorising with little scarves tied up. I hear that the Hermes Trilby scarf is exactly the right length to wrap around your head a la Bananarama in their heyday.
My post-cut tip: if you get a haircut that's quite different to your usual do, make sure you get your hairdresser to show you how to style it and which products to use. The products for short and long hair can be quite different. Hairdressers assume we're all as talented at styling our hair as they are but we need to be shown what to do, so don't be shy, get them to give you a lesson!
