This time, the First Lady opted for the Midi Dress in Check Print which sells for a very affordable £50. However, the price isn't the only catch. The fitted waist and pleat detailing make this a smart, flattering option for summer but for an ultra sophisticated look, Mrs O teamed the frock with a contrasting, cherry red belt. We like her style!

- September 2008
When Barack was a Democratic presidential candidate, Michelle took to the stage to join her husband after a presidential debate at the University of Mississippi. She managed to combine formal with feminine (she still has a penchant for florals), and we adored her blooming gorgeous frock from Thakoon.

- January 2009
This was the first time the world really sat up and took notice of Michelle's style. The new First Lady wowed the crowds at the Southern Inaugural Ball at the DC Armoury in Washington in a beautiful feminine one-shoulder gown by Jason Wu. The perfect dress to celebrate Barack's victory.

- November 2009
Classy and elegant (thank you, chiffon sash) yet show-stopping (thank you, Naeem Khan), Michelle was on fabulous form at a state dinner for the Indian Prime Minister.

- February 2009
As Michelle and Barack walked towards the East Room of the White House following a dinner in the State Dining Room, the First Lady proved she could do red carpet glamour with the best of them in a sparkling strapless Peter Soronen gown paired with a stunning statement necklace.

- May 2010
When the Mexican President Felipe Calderon visited the White House, Michelle Obama pulled out the big style guns in a shimmering purple Peter Soronen gown with a silver waistband. Perfect? Absolutely.

- January 2011
Talk about dress to impress! When Michelle threw a dinner in honour of Chinese President Hu at the North Portico of the White House, she created a real wow-factor moment in an ultra-dramatic, brush-stroke effect scarlet Alexander McQueen gown, and one-off Kimberly McDonald earrings. Pushing boundaries… fabulous.

- February 2011
The First Lady of America? In high street? Yep, sure is. Michelle chose every savvy shopper's favourite, H&M, for an appearance on the Today Show, and not only do we love her eye for a bargain, we also adore how she's added a bit of funk with a red waist belt and clashing mustard courts.

- March 2011
Sunny, summery and stylish, we fell head over heels for Michelle's stripy Marc by Marc Jacobs dress, as she was jetting out of Rio de Janeiro bound for Santiago, Chile - the ideal holiday-worthy frock.

- April 2011
The First Lady joined the ranks of fashionistas like Sarah Jessica Parker when she chose to wear Halston at the annual White House Correspondent's Gala. She dazzled as she chatted with Seth Meyers of hit US show Saturday Night Live.

- May 2011
As President Barack Obama arrived at Dublin Airport and stepped out of his Air Force One plane, it was his wife Michelle who stole the limelight in her formal yet funky jacquard dress, which she teamed with a chic updo (nearly ruined by high winds), a smart black jacket and an emerald-accented belt, which we just love.
