DESIGNER: Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli for Valentino

THE INSPIRATION: Russian aristocrats who fled to Paris after the Revolution.

TOP LOOKS: A delectable pistachio green velvet dress, a chevron lace dress with tulle detail, a white cape with plait detail (which echoed the models' Heidi hair) and Freja's finale number with delicate gold lace embroidery. But frankly, we'd take any of those evening dresses.

WHO WAS THERE: Anne Hathaway donned a sheer black dress for the show; also spotted were Amanda Peet, Carine Roitfeld and her daughter, Olivia Palermo and Margherita Missoni - modern royalty, which is exactly who these designers are catering to.

WHAT WE THOUGHT: Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli unleashed a collection of gorgeous dress after gorgeous dress for a/w 2011 in a collection that felt ethereal and completely modern at once. Signature Valentino elements remain - bold red statement-making dresses, collarless coats - but everything felt gloriously contemporary and feminine, with the ultra luxurious lace, tulle, silks and velvets in decadent gold, nude and ivory hues.
